Silent Sundays – Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Event Details

Date: Sunday 10/22/2017
Time: 4:00 pm
Location: Hotel Indigo Jacksonville – Deerwood Park, 9840 Tapestry Park Circle, Jacksonville FL 32246
Link: Click for Event Website
The Norman Studios Silent Film Museum and the Hotel Indigo® Jacksonville will screen Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at the next Silent Sundays event on Sunday, October 22, 4pm.

Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this 1920 cinematic version stars John Barrymore as Dr. Henry Jekyll, known for his enthusiasm for science and his selfless acts of service. But an uncharacteristic visit to a music hall, where he's entranced by an alluring dancer, sparks a fascination with the two contrasting sides of human nature. Back in his laboratory, he obsessively experiments with scientific means of revealing the hidden, dark side of man and finds success – but at a terrifying cost.

First published in January 1886, Stevenson's enduringly popular story sold nearly 40,000 copies within six months – a staggering figure for the time. Biographer Graham Balfour wrote in 1901 that the book's success was probably due rather to the "moral instincts of the public" than to any conscious perception of the merits of its art, noting that it was read even by those who rarely read fiction and quoted in pulpit sermons and in religious papers. By 1901, it was estimated to have sold over 250,000 copies in the United States alone and since has spawned more than 120 stage and film versions.

Jacksonville University's Tony Steve and the Silver Synchro Sounds will provide live musical accompaniment. Tickets are $5 and available at the door (cash or credit) and online.

Silent Sundays proceeds support efforts of the Norman Studios Silent Film Museum, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing public knowledge of Northeast Florida's early film industry and the preservation and restoration of Jacksonville’s only remaining silent film studio. The Norman Studios was among the nation's first to produce films starring all African American casts. Find out more at normanstudios.org.

Located on the lake in upscale Tapestry Park, the Hotel Indigo® Jacksonville is a boutique-style, lakefront property with interior design elements that recall Jacksonville's film history.

See Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, October 22 at Hotel Indigo® Jacksonville, 9840 Tapestry Park Circle in Jacksonville's Deerwood Park. Doors open at 3pm, film begins at 4pm.

When country music lovers talk about the greatest groups in the genre, Shenandoah is always at the forefront of any discussion. Fueled by Marty Raybon’s distinctive vocals and the band’s skilled musicianship, Shenandoah became well known for delivering such hits as “Two Dozen Roses,” “Church on Cumberland Road” and “Next to You, Next to Me” as well as such achingly beautiful classics as “I Want to be Loved Like That” and the Grammy winning “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart” duet with Alison Krauss.

Today that legacy continues as original members Raybon and Mike McGuire reunite to launch a new chapter in Shenandoah’s storied career. It all began when the guys got back together to perform a benefit concert for a friend battling cancer. “We saw how folks reacted,” Raybon says of the response to their reunion. “And then Jerry Phillips, son of legendary Sun Records producer Sam Phillips, said ‘You guys need to make a run at this. People still love what you do. You can tell by the reaction. There’s a lot of excitement in the air.'”

“We are really proud of the quality of the material that we have in our catalog and how it’s touched so many people’s lives,” McGuire says. “As far as the future goes, I’m expecting more of the same.”

What’s Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience

Event Details

Date: Sunday 03/11/2018
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Thrasher-Horne Center
Link: Click for Event Website

As one of the pioneers of Motown, singer-songwriter and producer Marvin Gaye helped shape the sound of R&B music and is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. Soul man Brian Owens is often referred to as the “second coming of Marvin Gaye.” Owens, who has performed at the White House for First Lady Michelle Obama, dazzles audiences with performances that are full of soul and love well beyond his peers of today. His refined style combining classic soul with a slight modern touch is why audiences everywhere are calling him the new voice of American soul. What’s Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience is Brian’s tribute to the legendary artist and includes music selections that span Gaye’s music-making career. Early solo hits like “Can I Get a Witness” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” share space with “You’re All I Need to Get By” and other classic duets. And any Marvin Gaye song list would be incomplete without perennial (and challenging) crowd-pleasers like “Let’s Get It On” or “Got To Give It Up.” At its heart, Brian’s Marvin Gaye Experience is about “preservation — upholding the tradition of true soul music that is so desperately needed in our culture today.” The show prominently features a suite of pieces from Gaye’s “What’s Going On” album, counted as “one of the most socially important artistic works in the history of American music.” In light of recent events in and around Ferguson Missouri where he resides, Brian says the show also speaks to a heightened sense of urgency and the prophetic beauty of Gaye’s 1971 work.
