The Opening Reception for “Un-American Gods” will be held on Saturday, September 7th at The Corner Gallery.
Through Un-American Gods, Marcus Williams explores the profound impact of European influence on African underdevelopment, directly focusing on Black people in America. This project invites viewers to imagine a world where Black people independently developed under their power, free to create a society aligned with their values and traditions.
The work employs a variety of materials and methods to create this envisioned world, ranging from acrylic to resin. Both two- and three-dimensional works are featured to provide a broader sense of cultural evolution and create an archaeological story of this hypothetical civilization.
The layered approach common in his creations is explored through various applications and materials to emphasize the diverse contributions of the people within this civilization over time.
